the captain
Growing up as a third-generation Floridian, my family gravitated to the water. My father and grandfather—“Poppop”—fished every chance they got, and their stories became my earliest memories. Even in the womb, I’d thrash around anytime my mom got near a bait bucket. From the moment I could hold a rod, my sister and I were on the boat. I’d pull ballyhoo from the chum bag for bait, and more than once a yellowtail nearly snatched the pole from my hands.
As I got older, the ballyhoo gave way to snapper, then mackerel—and the size of my catches grew alongside me. In my early teens I balanced offshore trips with motocross racing, always making time to crush bass in the ponds at the tracks. At 16, I earned my first pay as a deckhand on local drift boats. By 18, I was the full-time mate aboard the busy charter “Billin’ Office” out of Bayside Miami—and I spent four seasons tournament sailing for sailfish, fishing from Stuart to Palm Beach and throughout the northern Bahamas.
At 21, I earned my 100-ton Master’s license and took the helm of the sportfishing charter "Freespool" in North Miami, operating both private charters and commercial trips. I then ran a center-console out of Fort Lauderdale, chartering and commercial swordfishing, and freelanced aboard private sportfishing yachts up and down Florida’s east coast and in the Bahamas. I’ve managed and crewed on vessels ranging from a 63-foot Hatteras to a 25-foot Competition boat, and I still chase swordfish whenever I’m not booked. Over the years I’ve logged 90 consecutive days of double-header charters, chased swordfish through storms from Miami to Fort Pierce, led fleets in sailfish‐release tournaments as a mate, and earned trophies and checks as captain. Fishing isn’t just what I do—it’s who I am.
